Rock GOP Candidates Share Plans for Retaining Wisconsin Retirees and New Graduates
Where did everybody go?
Wisconsin is losing some of our most valuable residents: retirees and new college graduates.
The high level of taxation in our state is driving many retirees to establish residency in other states. Property taxes continue to rise, retirement income is taxed, and tax and fee increases make it difficult for seniors to live on a fixed income. Many retirees simply cannot afford to stay in Wisconsin.
New college graduates also are finding it difficult to stay in Wisconsin due to a weak economy and high unemployment rate. The job market is bleak here in Rock County. Janesville unemployment is at 11% and Beloit unemployment is at 16%, the worst in the state. Additionally, many graduates are burdened with double-digit student loan debt, and tuition in the UW system continues to rise.
This month our Rock County candidates were asked, “What will you do as a legislator to keep our retirees and new graduates in Wisconsin?”
