Rock GOP Candidates Share Plans for Retaining WI Retirees and New Graduates
August 19, 2010
(Janesville, WI)- Rock County Republican candidates are concerned about the high number of Wisconsin retirees and new college graduates moving to other states. They are committed to solving this problem, and are proposing specific plans for retaining retirees and new graduates in Wisconsin.
The high level of taxation in our state is driving many retirees to establish residency in other states. Property taxes continue to rise, retirement income is taxed, and tax and fee increases make it difficult for seniors to live on a fixed income. Many retirees simply cannot afford to stay in Wisconsin.
New college graduates also are finding it difficult to stay in Wisconsin due to a weak economy and high unemployment rate. The job market is bleak in Rock County. Janesville unemployment is at 11% and Beloit unemployment is at 16%, the worst in the state. Additionally, many graduates are burdened with high student loan debt, and tuition in the UW system continues to rise.
Rock GOP candidates are participating in a monthly column on the Rock County GOP website which provides a forum for candidates to address important issues concerning voters. For this month’s question, candidates were asked what they will do to keep retirees and new graduates in Wisconsin. Their answers are posted at www.rockcountygop.com/education.html.
