Rock GOP Candidates Share Views on Government Spending and Debt
July 13, 2010, Lonna Morouney
Government debt has grown at an alarming rate over the past year and is a major obstacle to economic growth and job creation. The state of Wisconsin has one of the worst budgets in the country with a $2.5 billion structural deficit and $2 billion in new taxes and fees, and overall spending increases of 6.2%. The state has borrowed $1.4 billion from the federal government to cover unemployment compensation. Legislators will face the challenge of creating a fiscally responsible budget when revenues are down and tax cuts are needed to grow our economy.
“We have to make tough choices, and not run from them,” Congressman Paul Ryan stated recently regarding reducing the federal deficit which is projected at $1.3 trillion this year.
Effective leadership requires an unwavering commitment to solving problems with principled and specific solutions. For this month’s question, we asked our candidates, “What ‘tough choices’ will you make as a legislator to cut spending and reduce government debt?”
