Wynn Urges Congress to Reject New Farm Labor Standards
(Whitewater) -- Today, State Representative Evan Wynn (R – Whitewater) joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers in urging the federal Department of Labor to abandon new rules covering youth employment on farms. In a letter to be sent to Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation, the state lawmakers urge Congress to reconsider the new rules which would vastly restrict youth employment in agriculture.
Rep. Evan Wynn, who as a member of the U.S. Army was deployed to numerous countries, said the viability of America’s farming industry is a national security issue and an integral part of America’s culture.
“An army marches on its stomach is more than a cliché statement – it’s the reality. I had many foreign citizens tell me during my deployment that one the main reasons America is so great is our ability to feed ourselves and our soldiers,” said Wynn. “Protecting and promoting this vital sector of our economy is paramount to our survival in the world.”
“On top of that, working on a farm is an incredible learning experience for our children,” Wynn added. “Working on a farm, youth develop a good work ethic and values, how to care for animals and nature, and participate in healthy physical activity - benefits that too many of today’s children lack.”
The letter was authored by Rep. Chris Danou (D – Trempealeau), and was co-signed by a bipartisan group of 28 lawmakers.
Rep. Wynn represents the 43rd Assembly District, which covers Whitewater, Milton, Edgerton, and most of western Rock County.
